  • MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS 2026

  • Selected boys applying for a Music Scholarship will be required to attend an audition on Monday 16 February, Friday 20 February or Monday 23 February 2026, between 3:00pm-6:00pm. All candidates who are not currently enrolled at the Sydney Grammar School  Preparatory Schools will also be required to sit and gain a satisfactory result in the School's Academic Scholarship Assessment Test, which will be held on Sunday 1 February 2026. Please look on the Schools’ scholarship website to register for the academic scholarship. Those candidates who sit the Academic Scholarship Examination in February may not be required to also sit the Entrance Examination held in May if their results meet the School's minimum requirements.

    Auditions will be held only for boys who have already received a high pass in the following specified AMEB examinations or who have evidence of an equivalent standard:

     

     A pass in the above grades does not guarantee an audition.

    *Applications from pianists will not be accepted unless they play a second instrument at the required level.

    The closing date for registration is Friday 30 January 2026. No applications will be accepted after this date.

    A short (no more than five minutes) video of the applicant performing on the chosen instrument/s is required to be submitted as part of the application process. Please upload the video to YouTube, setting the video to non searchable. Send the link to the video to foms@sydgram.nsw.edu.au. Videos can be recorded on your mobile and uploaded.

    Preference will be given to players of orchestral instruments. The scholarship is worth up to 100% remittance of fees, renewable each year to Sixth Form and subject to review by the Trustees, the Headmaster and the Director of Music. The Scholarship includes Instrumental tuition in two instruments if the boy chooses to learn at the School, as well as Musicianship classes.

    1.   Please have each of your instrumental teacher/s complete and submit the confidential teacher's reference form on the website SEPARATELY. Submissions must be completed by the application closing date.

    2.   Upload copies of examination reports above and, if required, piano accompaniments of the audition piece your son will be playing.

    3.   Send the YouTube link of the applicant’s video performance as part of the application submission to foms@sydgram.nsw.edu.au.    Boys auditioning for more than one instrument can send a separate video for each instrument or send the one video for multiple instruments. Each video should be no more than 5 minutes long.

    4.   The audition will be a maximum of 15 minutes. During this time your son will be required to play two contrasting pieces, one displaying his technical ability and the second demonstrating more interpretative skills such as an ability to play long sustained lines, dynamic contrasts, and phrasing. Your son’s instrumental teacher should be able to advise you on repertoire which will fulfil these requirements. If your son is auditioning on a second instrument, he should prepare one piece only on this second instrument. Some aural perception skills tests may also be given. All performance pieces should fit under 10 minutes in total. Auditions will be held on Monday 16 February, Friday 20 February 2026 or Monday 23 February 2026 between 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Please ensure is available at these times. Audition times will be confirmed by Monday 10 February.

    5.   If your son does not currently go to a Sydney Grammar Preparatory School, please register for the academic scholarship on the School website so your son can sit for the academic scholarship test in early February.
